Storytelling: Tapping the Power of Narrative
Everyone loves a good story. That’s why stories are so effective for engaging an audience, and inspiring action. However, translating complex issues, goals, and ideas into good stories can be daunting. Add new technologies—PowerPoint, the web—and we often ignore our natural inclinations to tell a compelling story.
In this class, Andy Goodman will explain why storytelling is the single most powerful communication tool you possess, and he will offer specific techniques for using stories to advance your mission.
Essentials
Schedule:
The course is comprised of four one-hour classes scheduled over consecutive weeks. Check our calendar...
Who will benefit:
Staff in large and small nonprofits charged with recruiting, working with volunteers or a board, writing proposals, working with media, running a website, raising money, training staff, inspiring action…and more.
Course materials:
All students will receive a copy of Andy Goodman’s booklet, Storytelling as Best Practice during the four-week session. No other reading is required.
The H word:
Between classes, students will be asked to do a little light homework: you’ll write stories (of 750 words or fewer) and refine these drafts over successive weeks. Completing homework assignments is not mandatory, but using time between classes to develop and hone your stories is the best way to exercise your new storytelling skill. (It can also allow you to complete this course with as many as three polished stories.)
